I almost can’t contain my enthusiasm for the HGTV Smart Home 2014 and their vibrant use of color and pattern. I was honored to be a part of the PR team that worked with builder, Carbine & Associates and was part of a VIP sneak peek of the house for Media and Home Bloggers.

The HGTV Smart Home is an English cottage-style residence located in Nashville’s Duncanwood Reserve neighborhood. The home is packed with technology to connect the home’s appliances and devices, giving the homeowner better control over energy use, security, interior climate and lighting. It is also jam-packed with style and has tons of ideas that you can incorporate into your own home.

Good news for Decorative Painters

It was really exciting to see the fresh ways that interior designers Linda Woodrum and Kelly Grokulski used pops of art and decorative painting throughout this home to add whimsy and character. My favorites were:

  • Bright blue painted kitchen cabinets– They painted the kitchen cabinets in HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams, Indigo Batik 7602.

  • Striped wall in the boy’s bedroom– They used a combination of painted wood and painted stripes to create this amazing focal wall.

  • Striped guitar wall in the basement bathroom– Check out this most unusual way they highlighted the guitar artwork in this bathroom. Love it!

  • Painted orange vanity– I love how they brought color to the party in this basement bathroom.

  • Chalk Art Focal Wall– Love this idea. The chalk art can be changed out seasonally. For an easy way to replicate this wall find a design online and shoot it up on the wall with a projector and color it in with chalk.

  • Funky Striped Workout Room– This workout room was created from an unused crawl space by the builder Carbine & Associates.

  • Amazing art throughout the home– Jack Thomasson did a fabulous job of bringing art into this space. My favorites were this huge colorful guitar by Deann Hebert

and this painting over the mantel by Marilyn Johnson.

Take aways from the HGTV Smart Home for decorative painters and designers:

  1. Be bold with color. It is time to put the days of grays and neutrals in the back seat and let color set a happy tone in your home.
  2. Add pattern to make a room feel fresh.
  3. Use art to bring color into the neutral spaces.

The home is not open to the public, but you can register to win it beginning April 15th. You can take a virtual tour of the home HERE.  If you would like to talk to us at Bella Tucker Decorative Finishes about adding color and pattern into your space please fill out the form below.
